Civic Relations: Past and Present Introduction In his book, Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle presents five main components that encapsulate civic relationships: happiness, virtues, deliberation, justice and friendship. Aristotle introduces the concept of utilitarianism, which is key to the thoughts and ideas he portrays in Nicomachean Ethics because according to him, one must do whatever will bring the individual the greatest good. As human beings, we must focus on the good purpose-- on the end product of what we set our minds to. This is where the five components of civic relationships come in; each one plays a key role in order to solve this equation of seeking the greatest good. In this case, we will analyze, compare and contrast exactly what the greatest good in civic relationships consists of and see in what ways Aristotle’s ideas are similar and different to the perceptions of successful, present day workplaces in the United States according to Great Place to Work Institute. Deliberation Aristotle discusses the importance of deliberation in ethics and civic relationships. Deliberation is key in order for society to decide what is right and wrong, good and bad. The ideas and opinions of people thus create particular standards for society, making things acceptable or not.
